Hunger doesn’t take a summer break. Many children are happy to be home for summer vacation. But there are others who are happy not to be in school, but sad because without school they might not get breakfast or lunch.
Did you know?
Six out of seven low-income kids who eat a free or reduced-price school lunch during the academic year do not get a free meal during the summer. (Source: Food Research and Action Center, Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation: Summer Nutrition Status Report 2012)
The good news is the U.S. Department of Agriculture has a Summer Food Service Program to help low-income children receive meals during the summer months! The meals are free and there are places all around the country to meet this need.
Help spread the word about the Summer Food Service Program to any children that need free meals during the summer. Even with this program, “…only one in seven kids who ate a free or reduced-price school lunch during the school year also participated in summer meal programs.”
